A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
