Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
